5 Propane Safety Tips

Propane is used for a number of things by American households. It can heat your home, fire up your grill, heat your patio or even power your stove.  Although propane has a relatively low flammability rating, it can be dangerous if not handled properly. Here are five tips for handling it safely:

1. Turn off small propane tanks when not in use. If you use small propane tanks to power your grill, a heater or other limited-use items, be sure to turn the valve off when you finish using the appliance.

2. Check for leaks periodically. Whatever you use propane to power in your home, it's a good idea to check the tank periodically for leaks. Propane gives off a tell-tale, sharp odor. You may also hear a hissing noise near the valve.

Consider installing a propane leak detector in your home. Similar to a carbon monoxide detector, this device will detect even low levels of propane in the air, amounts you might not be able to detect via smell. If you suspect a leak, turn off the vapor service value and call an HVAC professional. Since propane is heavier than oxygen, avoid lower levels of your home, like the basement, until you have the problem evaluated.

3. Store propane tanks outdoors. Since even empty propane tanks can harbor residual flammable propane, these aren't something you want to store in your basement, attic or attached garage. If your tank isn't in use, store it outdoors or in a well-ventilated shed or garage that's located well away from your living quarters. The same caution applies to your barn if you use that structure as a shelter for horses, cows or other livestock. Also, make sure that your tanks are stored in an upright position with the valve at the top, away from direct sunlight.

4. Never smoke or light a match around your propane tank. This is just common sense, but just like you wouldn't smoke while filling your car's gas tank, you shouldn't smoke around your propane tank. Even fumes can be combustible when exposed to an open flame.

5. Let a professional handle repairs to your system. Whether you're using propane for your grill or your home heating system, you don't want to be tinkering with the supply system and valves yourself. These are projects best left to a trained HVAC professional or grill specialist.
